An OPG, or orthopantomogram, is a type of dental X-ray that produces a single panoramic image of your entire mouth. It captures your upper and lower jaws, all of your teeth and the surrounding bone in one image.
What Can an OPG Show?
According to South Western Sydney Local Health District, an OPG allows your dentist to view the number and position of all teeth, including any that have not yet erupted. It can also help detect problems with the jawbone and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
At A Plus Dental in Chelsea Heights, we have an OPG machine on site. This means you do not need to visit a separate imaging centre before starting treatment.
What Happens During an OPG?
The process is quick and straightforward. You stand in front of the machine as your chin rests on a small shelf, and you gently bite down on a mouthpiece. The machine makes a rotation around your head to capture the image. There is no discomfort, and the whole process takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
You will need to remove your jewellery, earrings or metal objects from your head and neck area before the X-ray is taken. If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, let the team know before the scan.
Have You Been Told You Need an OPG?
If your dentist recommends an OPG as part of your assessment or treatment planning, we can perform it on site at A Plus Dental in Chelsea Heights during your regular appointment.
